The spread of a new strain of influenza A H1N1 virus across 50 countries worldwide since last month has helped remind the medical community that it needs to adapt to a virus that continuously reinvents itself. That was definitely the driving force in today's markets and it will likely contintue to be a factor in coming weeks as swine flu outbreaks have overwhelmed the U.S. health-care system, a report from Bloomberg said.
The two companies which we highlighted in our (05/25/09) report Which Small Biotech Firms Could Reap Benefits From Government's Flu Vaccine Initiative? were the biggest movers in the healthcare sector today.
Shares of Novavax, Inc. (Nasdaq:NVAX) soared today after the company and the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID) of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH) signed an agreement to cooperate in the evaluation of a virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate against the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus. Novavax has produced influenza A (H1N1) VLP vaccine against the strain recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Pharmaceutical company Hemispherx Biopharma's (Amex:HEB) shares hit a fresh 52-week high after an article in a peer-reviewed journal called its Ampligen treatment the "most promising" candidate among mucosal vaccines for preventing bird flu, and said it potentially may help with other variants of the flu. The study said mucosal vaccines are a better bet than current injection vaccines to fight a pandemic, as they may work against multiple strains. Hemispherx is waiting for approval from the FDA for Ampligen's use as a treatment for Chrinic Fatigue, but even if the approval is not given, the company has what it's CEO called "Multiple Shots on Goal," given their technology platforms for influenza prevention/control.
